Balanced on a slender stalk in Norfolk, England, the male bearded reedling in today's image stands out with a pale blue-grey head, a bright orange bill and the black facial markings that give the species its name. Despite its striking appearance, this small bird spends much of its life hidden among the dense wetland vegetation of marshes, lakeshores and reed beds.

Seen from above, the Kasilof River winds like a ribbon of turquoise through Alaska's Kenai Peninsula in the United States. The vivid blue water comes from glacial silt carried downstream from Tustumena Lake, one of the largest freshwater lakes in the state. Flowing about 27 kilometres before emptying into Cook Inlet, the river is shorter than its famous neighbour, the Kenai, but no less remarkable.

Most first-time visitors know Jaipur, in Rajasthan, India, as the Pink City, but the earlier royal capital was centred on Amber Fort. That's where much of the dynasty's political and architectural history was shaped. The fort developed over more than a century, beginning under Raja Man Singh I in 1592 and continuing under later Kachwaha rulers who controlled the kingdom that eventually became Jaipur State. The royal family moved to the newly planned city of Jaipur in 1727, but Amber continued to serve ceremonial functions.

Think of this as underwater hide-and-seek: the sea pen stands out while the crab blends in. Today's image comes from the waters surrounding Komodo National Park in Indonesia, established in 1980 and named after the Komodo dragon, the world's largest living lizard. The protected area includes islands, mangroves, seagrass beds and coral reefs. Located between the Pacific and Indian Oceans, the park is shaped by powerful currents that support a rich diversity of marine life, including species that rely on camouflage to survive.

What do a bear's ears, a house on fire and a road packed with hairpin turns have in common? They're all part of the story of southeastern Utah's public lands.

What if the full moon were the guest of honour at your family dinner? That is the idea behind the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival. Celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, it is one of the most important festivals in Chinese culture. Its roots trace back more than 3,000 years to moon-honouring rituals during the Zhou Dynasty. Its best-known legend tells of Chang'e, who drank an elixir of immortality and rose to the moon.

Most landmarks were built by history. This one was built for a story. Hobbiton Movie Set sits in Matamata, New Zealand, on a working sheep farm that caught the eye of filmmakers scouting locations for 'The Lord of the Rings' in 1998. The hills already looked Shire-like; round doors, tidy gardens and curling chimneys completed the illusion. The set was later rebuilt for 'The Hobbit' films and became a destination for those eager to step into Middle-earth.

The autumn equinox marks a turning point in the Northern Hemisphere. Occurring each September, it is the moment when the sun crosses the equator heading south, and day and night are nearly equal in length. After this celestial balance, daylight gradually shrinks as the journey towards winter begins.

On Lanzarote, part of Spain's Canary Islands, geology got carried away. Dark sand meets the Atlantic beneath cliffs streaked with ochre and rust, the handiwork of volcanic activity spanning millions of years. One chapter of this story arrived remarkably recently: between 1730 and 1736, numerous vents opened across Lanzarote, sending lava over dozens of square kilometres and burying roads, villages and farmland.

Few animals are both expert groomers and guardians of underwater forests. In today's image, a sea otter grooms its fur in Monterey Bay, California—a daily ritual essential to its survival. Sea otters have the densest fur of any animal, with up to one million hairs per square inch. Unlike seals and whales, they have little blubber, so their thick, air-trapping coat provides insulation against the cold Pacific.

No other city is nearly as romanticised as Paris. Yet the French capital's history has not always been as rosy as the sunset glowing behind the Eiffel Tower. Built for the 1889 Exposition Universelle, or the World's Fair, which marked the centennial of the start of the French Revolution, the tower was originally intended to serve as the fair's entrance centrepiece. Designed by engineer Gustave Eiffel and his team, the iron landmark rose more than 300 metres above the Champ de Mars and became the tallest structure in the world at the time.

As Oktoberfest opens today, visitors arriving in Bavaria, Germany, may hear a sound even older than the famous festival itself: the deep, resonant voice of the alphorn. This traditional Alpine instrument is closely linked to Bavaria, Austria and Switzerland, where it once helped shepherds communicate across mountain valleys.

A long, winding road cuts through rocks more than 300 million years old in England's Peak District. As if that geological timescale were not remarkable enough, the road passes through Winnats Pass, a narrow limestone gorge whose towering cliffs reveal the ancient seas that once covered this part of Britain.

Each year, late summer and early autumn bring one of France's most anticipated traditions: the 'vendanges,' the grape-picking season. The timing varies from one wine region to another and depends on weather conditions, sun exposure and the ripeness of the fruit. For many vineyards, harvest is still a hands-on effort, with teams carefully selecting bunches destined for some of the country's most celebrated wines.

Two polar bear cubs pick their way across the snow in Svalbard, a remote Norwegian archipelago of glaciers, mountains and frozen fjords deep in the Arctic Ocean. This wild landscape is part of the Barents Sea region, home to one of the world's largest polar bear populations, with around 2,600 bears.

Evolution occasionally favours maximalism. Just look at these red-and-green macaws with their scarlet plumage, vivid green wings and blue flight feathers. Their lives unfold across tropical South America, in a routine that connects fruit, seeds and soil in ways that are easy to miss from the ground.

In today's image, kochia plants spread across the landscape in China in shades of green and deep red. Native to parts of Eurasia, kochia was introduced to the United States in the late 1800s as an ornamental plant and a source of material for broom making. Its ability to withstand drought, heat, saline soils and low rainfall helped it spread across the Great Plains and much of the American West.

The image captures the jagged skyline of Cadini di Misurina at sunrise in Veneto, northeastern Italy. Visitors heading towards nearby Tre Cime di Lavaredo often come for the famous route only to find their attention hijacked by the Cadini. Part of the Dolomites, these needle-like peaks reaching more than 2,800 metres at their highest point seem sculpted for drama. The twist? They started out as ancient coral reefs.

A day at the beach is rarely quiet when California sea lions are around. With their booming barks, playful personalities and a knack for stealing the spotlight, these marine mammals know how to put on a show.

In September, the French Riviera is bathed in softer light, and the Mediterranean vegetation begins to regain its vibrancy. Along the coast, rosemary, wild thyme and Aleppo pine scent the air, while sailboats drift across the sheltered waters of Villefranche-sur-Mer.

Ever wondered why Andalusia is one of Spain's best-known regions? Flamenco, tapas, Moorish architecture and extensive olive groves all play a part. Beyond its famous cities, you'll find historic places like Olvera. Surrounded by more than 2 million olive trees, this village developed as a strategic frontier settlement shaped by centuries of change. The Castle of Olvera still watches over the town, while the Church of Our Lady of the Incarnation dominates the skyline below. Visit La Cilla Cultural Center to discover Olvera's medieval history and traditions.

When people think of South India, they often picture spice trade routes, classical music, folk traditions and a coastline shaped by centuries of maritime life. Follow Karnataka's Arabian Sea coast to the quieter shores of Gabit Keni Beach near Ankola, where fishing remains part of everyday life.

A beech tree stands alone amid golden fields near East Meon in Hampshire, providing a striking focal point in the rolling landscape of England's South Downs National Park. Agriculture has shaped these chalk hills for centuries, and farming remains an important part of the region today. The area's free-draining chalk soils support extensive arable farming, with wheat and barley among the most common crops. Throughout the summer, these crops ripen in the fields before harvest transforms the countryside into a patchwork of gold and stubble.

Perched above the Regnitz River, Bamberg's Old Town Hall is one of Germany's most distinctive landmarks. According to local legend, the town's bishop refused to give citizens land for their town hall, so they created their own artificial island in the river by driving wooden piles into the riverbed. The building that rose there became a symbol of civic independence and remains one of Bavaria's most photographed scenes.

At first glance, today's image looks more like a drowned woodland than a lake. Bare tree trunks emerge from the water, their reflections stretching across the surface as the Grampians glow in the distance. This is Lake Fyans, a man-made off-stream reservoir at the foot of the Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park in Victoria, Australia. Part of the regional Wimmera-Mallee water supply system, it also draws anglers with its brown and rainbow trout and trophy-sized redfin.

Delhi has no shortage of monuments built by emperors. But opposite Purana Qila stands one that tells a different story. Built in 1561–62, Khairul Manazil was commissioned by Maham Anga, Emperor Akbar's powerful foster mother and wet nurse. Its name, meaning 'the most auspicious of houses,' has a clever hidden detail. The Persian letters of Khairul Manazil form a chronogram corresponding to 969 AH, the Islamic calendar year of its completion.

Rising above the salt marshes along Germany's North Sea coast, Westerheversand Lighthouse is instantly recognisable for its distinctive red-and-white stripes. Built between 1906 and 1908 on 127 heavy wooden piles driven into the sand, the 40-metre cast-iron tower has stood on the Eiderstedt Peninsula for more than a century, guiding ships through the North Sea. Two identical white keeper's cottages flank the beacon, adding to its storybook appearance.

Waves usually belong to the ocean. In northern Arizona, United States, they rise from the desert instead. The swirling sandstone formations of Coyote Buttes, part of Vermilion Cliffs National Monument, were shaped by ancient dunes and millions of years of erosion, creating a landscape that seems to ripple even while standing still.

Along England's east coast, the Suffolk Heritage Coast blends windswept heaths, marshes, shingle beaches and expansive North Sea views. One of its best-known towns is Southwold, where water and history are inseparable. Almost encircled by the sea, the River Blyth and surrounding wetlands, the town occupies a slender peninsula shaped by centuries of fishing, trade and life at the edge of the water.

At Surathkal Beach, the waves aren't the only things making an impression. A lighthouse watches over the shore, a historic temple keeps centuries-old legends alive and, until recently, a stranded ship added an unexpected chapter to its story.
